I'm not sure if it really makes a difference but it's something you should consider. The Retina Display Macbook has an air ventilation system thats different than the other Mac's.

Once Pro Tools starts pushing your CPU your computer will get VERY hot. My one piece of advice is to get something to prop up your laptop from a table or your lap to enhance air flow. My second problem is that it doesn't have a disc drive which may or may not be important to you. It's a very simple thing to work around but it can get a little annoying. This now only leaves you with one USB port to plug in any hardware you may have. When you own Pro Tools, one of the USB ports has to be taken by the iLok drive in order to unlock and use your Pro Tools. The only problems I have with it is that it only has 2 USB drives. It was very pricey but as a student I was able to get a student discount which saved me around $200. I currently own a 15" Macbook w/ Retina Display and it runs Pro Tools 11 perfectly. I have been able to track 18ch+ of 24 bit audio at the same time into pro tools, and also run pro tools projects with 40+ tracks just fine. Honestly though, either computer will be fine for what youre trying to do.

I do have a friend who just got the latest macbook pro with mavericks and he says PT11 works fine on it though.īasically, if you can afford the retina model itll probably just add a little bit of time to when you eventually need to upgrade in the future, as youre getting better performance with the SSD. however I have not heard if the OS mavericks (the operating system that ships with new macs nowadays) is officially compatible with pro tools. The older versions of the macbook pro without retina are just fine for running pro tools. this makes the computer much quicker, but also more costly. And no artificial limits like between PT vanilla and PTHD.Flash storage is a LOT faster than a regular spinning hard drive. 30 day fully functioning free trial and no iLok needed. DP works infinitely better with video that PT does. Or move to another daw my alternate is Digital Performer. Yeah it sucks what Avid did to us PT11 users you just have to improvise/over come/adapt.
I would do what I could to get EC off that machine, backtrack to OSX 10.9.5 for PT and go to High Sierra for FCPX. Not sure if it still exists but the license combo used to be for PT10/11/12 or at least PT11/12.īack to El Crapitan - there's a reason it has that nickname - you have but to search here for people that have issues with it. You can pay a one-time reentry fee (IIRC it's $299 US) which will get you PT12 and all updates for one year. You don't have to but an any kind of subscription for PT12.

I did that on the iMac I used to use for PT and actually had three partitions: OSX 10.8.5, OSX 10.9.5 and OSX 10.10.5 It was a 2 TB 7200 rpm spinner.Īnd if the drive is not big enough it's relatively easy to split the case open and change out the drive for something bigger. If the drive is big enough size-wise (and NOT a Fusion drive) partition the drive so you can have two different boot partitions.
How big is your system drive? Your profile only says you have an iMac. PT 11 has all the functionality I need, but it will be dead to me if I upgrade the OS and on top of that, I now have to buy an annual subscription for my very occasional use of Pro Tools.

I have to say, it is really annoying the way Pro Tools routinely will not work with an OS upgrade unless one pays for an update of Pro Tools, but I know I am not the first person to say that. I'm not a sound engineer, I am a filmmaker who uses Pro Tools along with many other apps in my work, so it's not ideal to stay stuck on an old OS. Currently, I can't update Final Cut Pro to the latest version without upgrading OSX. The reason is because Pro Tools is on my main computer which I use for all manner of things.
